Shackerley’s BrickClad® brick facade nears completion at MOLO Hotel

Shackerley’s BrickClad® brick facade nears completion at MOLO Hotel

The brick facade of a 130-room hotel in Liverpool is nearing completion, following installation of Shackerley’s BrickClad® mechanically fixed brick cladding system by Task Contract Services.

The £25 million MOLO hotel in the heart of Liverpool city centre has been built on the site of the former Duke Street car park. The Shackerley BrickClad® mechanically fixed brick facade system complements the brick facades of local buildings, while offering speed and ease of construction. The BrickClad® Saxony brick cladding system has been installed in a red multi-mix colourway, delivering natural variation to the brick facade. The facade is being installed by Task Contract Services

Shackerley worked closely with the architects, who originally specified a 50mm-wide Roman format brick for the facade. The Shackerley team developed a bespoke solution to create the same longitudinal visual effect for the brick facade with two brick sizes: 277x65mm and 269 x65mm. This has enabled the installation team to achieve the architectural style required for the 2250m2 mechanically fixed brick facade with the buildability benefits of a brick cladding system.

Because the Liverpool hotel is in a coastal location, the steel used for the mechanical facade fixing system was a specification consideration for the project. The BrickClad® carrier rail for the mechanically fixed brick cladding system was specified in stainless steel, and manufactured in-house at one of Shackerley’s ISO 9001 certified factories in Lancashire.

To install the BrickClad®  brick Cladding system, the site team installed Shackerley’s SureClad® primary support brackets to create a supporting grid for SureClad® ‘T’ profile extrusions. The ‘T’ profiles were inserted into these brackets and aligned to ensure planarity, then secured with stainless steel fixings. Isolator tape was then applied to the face of the vertical ‘T’ profiles and the BrickClad® cassette channels were fixed to the SureClad® support framework ready to receive the BrickClad® Saxony bricks.

With the carrier system in place, the BrickClad® mechanically profiled bricks were fitted into the precision-manufactured BrickClad® cassettes. The top lip of the each brick was fitted into the upper recess of the cassette and a rubber mallet was used to engage the brick securely in the BrickClad® cassette rail, prior to pointing with Shackerley’s specially-formulated BrickClad® lime  pointing mortar.

Shackerley’s BrickClad® brick cladding system for brick facades

Shackerley’s BrickClad® brick cladding system is an ideal alternative to external brickslip cladding for any project that requires a brick facade. Brick is a traditional construction material in the UK and the BrickClad® brick rainscreen system enables the construction of a brick facade using an innovative mechanical brick cladding installation system. This means that a brick facade can be achieved faster, but unlike brickslip systems, BrickClad® uses genuine kiln-fired clay bricks, providing brick cladding that look and feels like traditional brick facade construction. With BrickClad®, Shackerley provides the benefits of mechanical brick facade installation and the consistency of a brick rainscreen, while offering brick cladding with the aesthetics of traditional brick.

Installation for our mechanical fixed brick facade involves insertion of each brick into BrickClad® Magnelis/Stainless steel cassettes. Each mechanical brick is secured inside the cassette by its unique BrickClad® profile and is pointed with BrickClad® lime brick pointing mortar.

Shackerley’s BrickClad® brick cladding answers the non-combustible cladding requirements of BS EN13501-1. Our brick facade system is an A1 rated rainscreen.
