Shackerley & Darwen Terracotta faience project collaboration

Shackerley & Darwen Terracotta faience project collaboration

Shackerley has worked collaboratively with Darwen Terracotta to supply a bespoke faience solution for a prestigious commercial office building in Maidenhead. Aiming to be one of the most energy efficient commercial buildings in the Thames Valley, Project Tempo is being delivered by ISG, on behalf of Legal & General.

The project involves the refurbishment and extension of an existing office building, with a new facade and the addition of low energy technology, including more than 5,000 sq. ft of roof top solar panels and an air source heat pump. The BREEAM Excellent rated project also includes 11,000 sq. ft of biodiverse terracing and roofs.

Shackerley has worked with Darwen Terracotta on a number of previous faience projects, including Manchester Museum and Dublin Library. The challenging and unusual faience for Project Tempo involves bespoke glazed terracotta panels being mechanically fixed to an oval-shaped bar inside the building. The Art Deco style bar will be completely wrapped in the gold/green high-shine faience tiles, both below and above the serving area, for the full 360 degrees of the bar.

Darwen Terracotta developed the faience pieces using a visual graphic from the architect, Sutton CA, to meet the concept. The undulating faience panels create a three dimensional and tactile design for the bar, but such bespoke shapes presented challenges for enabling secure fixings to be installed onto the rear of each panel.

Shackerley and Darwen Terracotta worked collaboratively to enhance the buildability of the faience design so that it could be installed using our proven SureClad®️ Hang On fixing system. This involved working together on design development to ensure the size and shape of the faience tiles could accommodate 80mm brackets at four locations on the rear face of each panel. Shackerley produced detailed drawings to provide a precise specification of the relative positions of each bracket, allowing for the tolerances calculated for the glazed terracotta faience panels.

Shackerley then carried out the specialist drilling required to attach the undercut anchors to the rear of each panel, creating pre-fabricated installation-ready panels in our ISO 9001 Lancashire factories for delivery to site.

Jon Wilson, MD of Darwen Terracotta Limited  commented: “Shackerley's expert technical team understands the complex and bespoke nature of our product. Their technically advanced equipment enables tiles to be drilled off site and the fixings to be attached securely with undercut anchors, so that the system can be supplied to site with Shackerley’s proven SureClad®️ substructure.

“Working with Shackerley means we can now offer the client an installation ready faience panel solution for prestige buildings such as Project Tempo.”
