SureClad® porcelain stone features at Glasgow hotel

Shackerley’s SureClad® porcelain stone cladding has been specified for a Glasgow hotel facade. The Glasgow City Centre Buchanan Galleries Premier Inn was converted to a hotel from an office building a decade ago, and has since become a popular place to stay for both business travellers and those visiting Glasgow for a city break.

 

 

The large format Shackerley SureClad® porcelain stone cladding panels have been installed to create a facade feature at ground and first floor level. Specified in a polished black colourway, The SureClad® porcelain stone facade system contrasts with the upper storeys.

The effect of the SureClad® porcelain stone cladding is to create an impression of negative space at the hotel’s lower levels. This results in an optical illusion from a distance, with the hotel tower appearing to ‘float’ above the ground, while Shackerley’s porcelain stone cladding provides a high-end, reflective facade surface at street level, framing the ground floor retail units.

Installed by Topek using Shackerley’s SureClad® Hang On mechanical fixing system, the SureClad® porcelain stone facade is ideal for city centre locations such as the Premier Inn on the junction of Sauchiehall Street and West Nile Street in Glasgow, because Shackerley’s porcelain stone cladding material is virtually impervious. This means that the porcelain stone facade is resistant to weathering, U/V and freeze/thaw conditions, as well as airborne pollutants, algae and graffiti.

The SureClad® porcelain stone facade system is a proven, low-maintenance cladding system for commercial buildings, combining durability and flexible facade design with a luxury aesthetic. An A1-rated cladding system to BS EN 13501-1, available with either an A1 or A2-s1 d0 safety meshing, Shackerley’s SureClad® porcelain stone cladding provides a non-combustible facade solution, ideal for hotels and residential buildings.

Shackerley supplied the SureClad® porcelain stone cladding system for a total facade area of 460m2. The facade was manufactured as large format 1198x598mm installation-ready porcelain stone facade panels at Shackerley’s ISO 9001 certified factories in Lancashire, in compliance with ISO TS 17870-3:2023, in line with our long-standing best practice as a leading UK facade manufacturer.

The Glasgow Premier Inn project builds on a large number of hotel sector installations for Shackerley’s SureClad® porcelain stone facade system, including other Premier Inns along with projects for major hotel brands including Hilton, Holiday Inn, Travelodge and Park Inn.

 

Porcelain cladding is a fully vitrified cladding system suitable for any commercial building. Shackerley’s SureClad®  porcelain is cut into cladding panels at Shackerley’s UK cladding manufacturer site in Lancashire and fully prefabricated as an installation-ready porcelain cladding system .

Porcelain cladding systems are amongst the most lightweight cladding systems, providing an alternative to traditional stone cladding systems. Even large format porcelain cladding panels provide a lightweight facade because porcelain cladding systems can be manufactured as thin as 10mm

Porcelain cladding is an excellent choice for scratch and abrasion resistance and it does not get scratched with normal wear and tear. Porcelain cladding panels are rated 8.5 on the MOHS scale - a qualitative scale that characterises the scratch resistance of various minerals and rates diamond as 10.

Any porcelain cladding system should be tested for hard body and soft body impact resistance. Shackerley’s impact resistant porcelain cladding systems have been tested to verify impact resistance and durability.  All Shackerley cladding systems are tested and certified in accordance with ISO TS 17870-3 and CWCT standards for hard body impact resistance and soft body impact resistance.
