BrickClad® involved in hotel ‘first’ in Dublin
Shackerley’s BrickClad® mechanically fixed brick cladding system has been used as part of the transformation of Eircom’s former Brutalist office building in Dublin, creating Western Europe’s first ever Hilton Home2 Suites hotel.
The eight-storey former Telephone House building on Marlborough Street has been reimagined as a 290-room hotel with a 1,127m2 BrickClad® facade in a 215 x 65 x 25mm beige-coloured brick from our extensive ‘Saxony’ BrickClad® range.
The project was design by JFA Architects, in a redevelopment delivered by Stewart Construction, and we provided our BrickClad® mechanically fixed cladding system in partnership with Kingspan, as part of a semi-unitised facade project combining the buildability and aesthetics of our brick cladding system with Kingspan’s K-Roc Karrier panel, and a modular frame from Castle Modular.
The delivery partners worked collaboratively to enable a faster build Pulling for the project, with off-site modular construction methods enabling quality-assured factory assembly and contributing to reduced health and safety installation risk on site.
The project was the first to pioneer fixing of our BrickClad® Magnelis® coated steel cassette rails directly onto the outer face of the Kingspan K-Roc Karrier panel. This installation method has been CWCT tested and certified and has since become an increasingly common approach for our Kingspan BrickClad® projects due to the time and cost savings it can provide.
Our BrickClad® system is also a popular choice for off-site construction projects, providing the aesthetics of traditional brick combined with the buildability of a contemporary mechanically fixed brick facade. For this project, the facade sections were loaded onto a flat bed to enable pointing of each section to be carried out with no working at height requirements, delivering an exceptionally high quality and consistent finish. Once transported to site, and the rigid brick facade sections were then lifted into position using a crane.
The Magnelis® steel cassette rails for our BrickClad® brick facade were manufactured in-house at our ISO 9001 certified factories in Lancashire, using our bespoke roll forming equipment. Castle Modular installed the Kingspan K-Roc Karrier panels and BrickClad® brick facade system onto their prefabricated frames at their factory, including completing each unitised facade module with our BrickClad® pointing mortar.
The project demonstrates the versatility and outstanding quality of our BBA certified BrickClad® mechanically fixed brick facade system and continues the long-established partnership between Shackerley and Kingspan. Kingspan’s A2-s1, d0 rated K-Roc Karrier panels are perfect partner for our A1 rated BrickClad® facade system. The interlocking, stone wool core insulated panels are designed specifically for rainscreen systems and deliver thermal conductivity of 0.044 W/m·K for an energy efficient building envelope.
The Hilton Home2 Suites project builds on our portfolio of projects in Ireland and adds to the wide array of hotels delivered with a Shackerley SureClad® or BrickClad® facade, including Hilton branded hotels in Wembley, Stanstead Airport, and Doncaster Racecourse.
