Shackerley ceramic facade brings NYC to Leeds
Shackerley’s SureClad® porcelain cladding system has been installed at the SOYO, New York Square project; bringing a ceramic facade to an £81m luxury residential development in the centre of Leeds.
Located in the South York Road area of the city, from which it takes its name – SOuth YOrk – the project and its ceramic rainscreen is part of a £300m regeneration programme for a six-acre site in the city centre, which includes hotel-style apartments, bars, restaurants and three public squares, which will host pop-up theatres, markets and events. Developed by MODA Living and constructed by Yorkshire-based contractor, Caddick Construction, SOYO is a high-rise development with lightweight cladding that brings 515 high specification apartments with a ceramic facade to the heart of city’s cultural centre.
The specification for the porcelain facade needed to match the prestige of the development and the ceramic cladding was selected to reference the architectural context of the surrounding cultural and historic buildings. Shackerley’s SureClad® ceramic facade system in creamy beige ‘Travertine’ large format cladding panels has been used successfully for porcelain rainscreen in many similar commercial developments and the mechanical fixed cladding was specified for this project in a honed, natural finish as the main ceramic facade material. Contrasting ‘Rio Black’ Shackerley SureClad® porcelain cladding large format rainscreen panels were also specified in a textured finish, lightweight cladding. These porcelain cladding panels were used at low level to create an optical illusion of ‘floating’ ceramic facade and deliver impact to the porcelain facade design.
Ideal for high-rise residential developments, the mechanical fixed cladding for the Shackerley SureClad® ceramic facade system is building regulations-compliant for developments 18m or taller. The Euroclass A1 certified porcelain cladding large format rainscreen panels are fitted with an anti-fragmentation meshing system for safety. Shackerley has both A1 and A2-s1,d0 to BS EN13501-1 backing systems available for the company’s large format cladding systems. The lightweight cladding ceramic facade panels manufactured for the SOYO project at one of Shackerley’s ISO 9001 accredited factories in Lancashire are a A2-s1,d0 certified ceramic rainscreen to BS EN 13501-1, and the Queen’s Award-winning SureClad® Access System used to installed the mechanical fixed cladding has been seismic tested for safety to evidence the robustness of the Shackerley SureClad® ceramic facade system.
Each of the large format rainscreen 1200 x 600mm porcelain cladding panels was cut and drilled using the bespoke ceramic facade machinery at the Shackerley factories, with undercut anchors fitted to the rear of each SureClad® porcelain facade panel to provide robust construction for the lightweight cladding system and complete assurance of a permanent and highly durable fix for the ceramic facade. The large format cladding panels were delivered to site, aligned to the ceramic facade installation programme.
The completed Shackerely SureClad® ceramic facade delivers an optimised lightweight cladding solution for the luxury development in the city centre location. Impermeable U/V resilient, and resistant to graffiti and algae, the SureClad® ceramic rainscreen will not fade or discolour over time and requires minimal maintenance, making it an ideal mechanical fixed cladding for porcelain facades on high-rise buildings.
Installation expertise optimises the performance and aesthetics of all our facade systems here at Shackerley. At the SOYO project in Leeds the ceramic facade has been installed by Axis Group https://axisgroup.co.uk/ , who have completed many projects using Shackerley facade systems.
