Shackerley’s Surestone engineered stone cladding system has been chosen for the facades of two residential buildings at the New Garden Square regeneration project in Edgbaston, Birmingham

Located just a mile from Birmingham city centre, the two residential buildings, constructed by Winvic for Moda Living, have been designed with full slab-to-slab facade panels by Glancy Nicholls Architects. Shackerley has provided these extra large cladding panels, each of which is just 20mm thick, to create the Surestone engineered stone facade. The facade panels are being processed at our state-of-the-art ISO 9001 certified factories in Lancashire, providing a fully-prefabricated cladding system with installation ready facade panels delivered to site.

The Surestone engineered stone rainscreen facade system has been specified in a creamy beige colourway for one of the residential buildings, with light grey Surestone engineered stone cladding panels specified for the other, both with a honed finish. The engineered stone cladding system combines the aesthetics of a natural stone facade with the longevity and low maintenance benefits of an engineered stone rainscreen, delivering a facade that articulates the prestige of the location while providing resilience against weathering, UV, pollution and graffiti.

The facades for the two buildings require extensive detailing, including splayed facade panels, ventilated cladding panels, bird boxes and cladding panels with returns into the soffits. Hundreds of bespoke facade details have been precision manufactured at Shackerley’s factories to meet these requirements, with tolerances engineered to provide a neat finish.

The facade installation is being carried out concurrently on both buildings using the SureClad® Hang On fixing system by Datum Facades. Once complete, the SureClad® engineered stone cladding system will deliver a luxury aesthetic and an A2-s1 d0 non-combustible facade to BS EN 13501-1. Thanks to the low porosity of Shackerley’s engineered stone facade materials, the completed facade will also provide an extended, low maintenance service life, maintaining this high-end aesthetic over time.
