SureClad® Natural Stone at VITA Student
Shackerley has provided the SureClad® Natural Stone facade system for a Vita Student development in the heart of Leeds.
The student living project was originally designed and partially constructed as a hotel, and architectural and Interior Design practice, Fuse Studios, revised the scheme to create 312 student accommodation studio apartments within a 16-storey building, with amenity and retail accommodation on the lower floors.
The local planning authority required a natural stone facade for the project and Shackerley’s SureClad® Natural Stone cladding was selected. As the building is a residential development more than 18m tall, a non-combustible cladding system was also important. Shackerley’s SureClad® Natural Stone system is certified as an A1 non-combustible facade system to BS EN 13501-1, so it was an ideal solution, and was specified with an A2-s1,d0 rated anti-fragmentation safety mesh.
The Shackerley team proposed SureClad® undercut anchored natural limestone cladding panels that complement the colour, tone and texture of nearby buildings.
To help gain approval from the developer and the local planning office, Shackerley produced sample SureClad® Natural Stone cladding panels at one of our ISO 9001 accredited factories in Lancashire, and facade installation specialist, Keyclad Limited, constructed a 3m x 4.5m section of the stone panels on site in Leeds.
To contrast with the light beige colour of the main SureClad® limestone facade panels, Fuse Studios also selected a black natural granite facade material from the SureClad® Natural Stone cladding system range for the lower floors, in the same ‘honed’ finish.
Keyclad Limited used Shackerley’s Queens Award winning SureClad® Access installation system for the project, which helped the team to manage the programme with non-sequential installation.
A total of 3924m2 of Shackerley SureClad® honed natural stone limestone was used to create the natural stone facade, along with 125m2 of honed natural black granite cladding panels. The project builds on Shackerley’s wide ranging portfolio in the student accommodation sector, which includes a previous Vita Student project in Edinburgh.
