Project Details - Royal Warwick Square

Royal Warwick Square

Specified by: St Edward (Berkeley Group)

Project Overview

Recreating the traditional London garden square with a contemporary twist, Royal Warwick Square is an ambitious development of luxury apartments in the heart of the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea. A stone’s throw from Holland Park and some of the capital’s most exclusive shops and restaurants, the development by St Edward, part of the Berkeley Group, exudes the quality and prestige of its brand and location.

The project is the final phase of a masterplan for the location and comprises six apartment blocks, four of which were specified with Shackerley’s SureClad® natural stone façade system, featuring both limestone and granite cladding panels.

Design Requirements

A design concept had already been established for the development’s previous two phases, so a cladding system was required that would match those phases while answering St Edward’s requirement for a system that had been tested to meet stringent quality and safety standards.

The chosen façade system had to be Euroclass A1 or A2 s1-d0 to BS EN 13501-1 to meet compliance requirements for residential developments of 18m high or more. As an aspirational brand known for the highest quality standards, St Edward also put in place an additional range of testing and certification criteria to achieve a best in class development.

Shackerley was able to provide the comprehensive certification required, enabling use of the Shackerley SureClad® natural stone façade system to be agreed with the development’s warranty provider.

The Shackerley SureClad® natural stone façade system also enabled design flexibility for the buildings’ structure, while providing a proven cladding system that is in-keeping with both the architectural context of the location and the previous phases of the development.

Materials Used

Four of the development’s six apartment blocks have been constructed with a natural stone façade using Shackerley’s SureClad® façade system in a honed, creamy-coloured natural limestone, with grey feature panels in natural granite. The large-format 1200 x 600mm SureClad® natural stone panels were just 30mm thick. As a natural stone product, the façade material is certified as A1 non-combustible and, with no additions to the stone panels, the whole SureClad® installation at Royal Warwick Square delivers an A1 façade.

Façade panels totalling 12,500m2 were manufactured at one of Shackerley’s ISO 9001 certified factories in Lancashire, comprising 27,700 pieces of stone and 6,800 bracketed returns. The panels were manufactured aligned to the installation schedules of the two cladding contractors involved in the project, and were installed using Shackerley’s SureClad® undercut anchored Hang On installation system.
